How to Get the Best Price for Your Car
Want to maximise what you get for your car? These practical tips will help you present your car well, price it right and avoid the common mistakes that cost sellers money.
After nearly twenty years of buying cars, I have seen every mistake sellers make. The good news is that most of them are easy to avoid. Here is what actually makes a difference when it comes to getting the best price for your car.
Know What Your Car Is Actually Worth
The first step is to get a realistic idea of what your car is worth in the current market. Do not rely on what you paid for it, what your neighbour got for theirs, or what you think it should be worth. The market does not care about any of that.
Use these tools to check:
- Auto Trader โ search for similar cars (same make, model, year, mileage and spec) and see what they are listed for. Remember that listed prices are asking prices, not sold prices.
- We Buy Any Car / Motorway โ these give you a quick online valuation. They tend to be on the lower end, but they give you a floor price.
- CAP HPI / Glasses Guide โ these are the trade guides that dealers and buyers like me use. You can access basic valuations through some comparison sites.
The truth is that your car is worth what someone will actually pay for it today. A realistic valuation saves you from wasting weeks waiting for an offer that will never come.
Presentation Makes a Real Difference
You do not need to spend a fortune, but a clean, well-presented car will always get a better offer than a dirty, cluttered one. Here is what to do:
Exterior:
- Give it a proper wash and dry โ not just a quick rinse
- Clean the wheels and wheel arches
- Touch up any obvious stone chips if you have the right paint code
- Make sure all the lights are working
Interior:
- Hoover the carpets and seats thoroughly
- Wipe down all the hard surfaces
- Clean the windows inside and out
- Remove all your personal belongings
- Get rid of any smells โ air fresheners can help but do not mask a serious odour problem
Engine bay:
- A clean engine bay suggests a well-maintained car. You do not need to degrease it professionally, but removing obvious dirt and debris helps.
A professional valet costs around ยฃ50โยฃ150 and can easily add more than that to the perceived value of the car. It is usually worth it.
Fix the Small Things (But Not the Big Ones)
Small, cheap fixes are worth doing. Replacing a blown bulb, fixing a cracked wing mirror glass, replacing worn wiper blades โ these are the kinds of things that make a buyer think the car has been looked after.
Do not spend money on big repairs hoping to get it back in the sale price. If your car needs a new clutch, a timing belt or a major service, you are unlikely to recover the full cost. Most buyers โ including me โ will factor in the cost of repairs and adjust the offer accordingly. You are better off being upfront about what needs doing and pricing accordingly.
Have Your Paperwork Ready
A full service history, both sets of keys and a valid MOT all add value. A car with a stamped service book from a franchised dealer will always be worth more than an identical car with no history.
If you have old MOT certificates, keep them. They show the mileage history of the car and help confirm the odometer reading is genuine โ which is reassuring for any buyer.
Be Honest About the Condition
This is the one that catches sellers out more than anything else. If you describe your car as being in excellent condition and the buyer arrives to find scratches, dents, warning lights or worn tyres, the offer will drop โ and you will have wasted everyone's time.
Be accurate. Describe the car as it is. A buyer who knows what they are getting will give you a fair offer and stick to it. A buyer who feels misled will either walk away or use every flaw as leverage to knock money off.
Timing Can Matter
Car values fluctuate with the seasons and with fuel prices. Convertibles sell better in spring. Four-wheel drives are more in demand in autumn and winter. Fuel-efficient cars become more popular when petrol prices spike.
If you are not in a rush, it can be worth waiting for the right moment. But if you need to sell quickly, do not let perfect be the enemy of good.
